Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC, is Joshua B. Gottfried, and Matthew A. Somberg. We are dedicated professionals with diverse backgrounds, working together to help make our clients' retirement goals become reality. Each of us is a registered representative with Commonwealth Financial Network®, Member FINRA/SIPC.


Joshua Gottfried CFP®, AIF® is a founder and principal of Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC, an independent investment and financial services firm. His practice focuses on retirement income planning for suitable individuals and families within five years of retirement, and helping maintain these clients’ lifestyles throughout their retirement years.

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner with 15 years of experience, Josh provides comprehensive financial planning guidance and is committed to the highest standards of ethical conduct. He specializes in creating individually tailored retirement income plans by analyzing investment allocations, maximizing pension and Social Security benefits, and mitigating overall risk throughout retirement.

Josh has written articles for and been quoted in many publications, including The New York Times, Morningstar, Financial Planning Magazine, Investment Advisor Magazine, and The New London Day. In 2014, Josh was named on the REP. magazine's "Top Next Gen IBD Advisors" list1. In 2011, Josh was named as one of the Top 100 Independent Financial Advisors in America by Registered Rep Magazine. He was named a Five Star Wealth Manager for each of the past four years in Connecticut Magazine by Crescendo Business Services2.

Josh is a registered representative of Commonwealth Financial Network® (CFN), member FINRA/SIPC, an independent broker/dealer with a national network of more than 1,300 financial professionals. CFN has been recognized ten times as the Broker/Dealer of the Year by Investment Advisor Magazine. Josh is also a member of Commonwealth's Leaders Club, which recognizes the top 5 percent of all Commonwealth advisors.

Josh enjoys educating people about their retirement options. Using patience and insight, he breaks down complex financial decisions into easily understandable steps. Josh has presented to over 5,000 public school educators and state employees, explaining their pension, Social Security and health insurance benefits.

Josh does philanthropic work for The House of Bread, the American Cancer Society, and the Jewish National Fund. In addition to donations of money and time, he also manages three endowments, and sits on the Board at Beth El Temple in West Hartford.

Josh loves running, hiking and camping and is an avid reader of 19th and early 20th century American history. He lives with his family in downtown Hartford.

Matthew Somberg is a principal and founder of Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC, an independent investment and financial services firm.

For the last 14 years, Matthew has focused on providing sophisticated wealth planning and investment management strategies to affluent individuals, families and small institutions. Matthew is a registered representative of Commonwealth Financial Network®, member FINRA/SIPC, an independent broker/dealer with a national network of more than 1,300 financial professionals, which has been recognized ten times as Broker/Dealer of the Year by Investment Advisor magazine1.

In 2013 Matthew was named #7 in the United States for Independent Advisors under the age of 40 – ranking #7 on the Top 40 under age 40 by Rep Magazine.

From 2007 thru 2013 he was named to Commonwealth's Leaders Club, which recognizes the top 5 percent of Commonwealth advisors. In 2010, 2011, 2012 & 2013 Matthew was named to the Commonwealth Chairman's Club which honors the top 40 Commonwealth Advisors nationally. Matthew holds numerous professional registrations and certifications, including the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designation, the Certified Long Term Care Consultant® (CLTC®) the FINRA Series 6, 7, 63, and 66 securities registrations; and his Connecticut Life and Health license. He maintains client relationships and maintains registrations to practice and serve clients in many states throughout the country.

Matthew has presented for—and is frequently requested by—various school teachers unions and school administrative unions to educate Connecticut educators on their pension, benefits, social security, and overall retirement planning strategies. Since 2000, Matthew has presented public workshops to more than 5,000 public school educators and their families.

Matthew is an honors graduate of Brandeis University, with degrees in both economics and history. He is a member of the Phi Alpha Theta National Honor Society, and his writings on the effects of North American Free Trade Agreement have been published.

He is the Treasurer of Kol Haverim Synagogue in Glastonbury and a member of the Brandeis University Alumni Association. He supports many charitable organizations and foundations such as Connecticut Children's Medical Center, the American Cancer Society, the American Red Cross, and the University of Rhode Island General Scholarship Fund. Matthew enjoys non fiction reading and is an avid marathon runner and triathlete. He is a devoted husband to his wife, Amy, and father to his three kids, Ella, Eli and Cooper. They reside in South Glastonbury, Connecticut.

Dan Heffernan started at Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC in May 2006 after graduating with honors from Northeastern University where he earned his bachelor's degree. His expertise with the CT Teachers’ Retirement system is uniquely coupled with a specialty in “retirement income planning” allowing him to successfully help clients create an effective retirement income plan to maintain a client’s desired lifestyle over the course of their retirement. This includes helping to identify retirement income needs and objectives and evaluate the client’s current situation relative to those goals and to create and manage retirement income portfolios appropriate for each client’s situation. Combining this unique blend of interpersonal skills and financial planning abilities, Dan has presented for various school teachers unions and school administrative unions to educate Connecticut educators on their pension, benefits, social security, and overall retirement planning strategies. His focus is ensuring that the quality of service that GSWM strives to offer is actually delivered to each and every single client.

Dan holds numerous professional certifications and registrations, including FINRA Series 6, 63, and 65 securities registrations and also has Connecticut Life and Health insurance licenses, and the Certified Long Term Care Consultant® (CLTC®). When not in the office, Dan enjoys reading, traveling, and keeping active playing sports. Dan currently resides in Wallingford, Connecticut.

 

 


 

 

   

Jim DeMartino, CFP®, joined Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC in October 2009.

Jim is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional with 14 years' experience in the financial industry.

Jim is committed to providing every client with superior, impartial financial planning advice that is specific to each individual’s unique circumstances — and to communicating that advice in straightforward, easy-to-understand language. 

Jim specializes in retirement income planning, and is exceptionally knowledgeable about the many complex intricacies of both the CT State Employees Retirement System and the CT Teacher Retirement System, as he has helped shepherd hundreds of clients through the often daunting retirement process.  Jim is also involved in all other areas of financial planning, including investment management, insurance and estate planning. Jim's knowledge of the various aspects of financial planning, combined with his strong organizational skills and his personable, welcoming style, make him a joy for our clients to work with and a valuable member of our team. In addition to his CFP® certification, Jim holds Series 7 and Series 66 securities registrations through Commonwealth Financial Network, and is insurance-licensed for, and well-versed in, life insurance, variable life, annuities and long term care insurance.

Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Jim has resided in Connecticut for the past 10 years, and now lives in Glastonbury.  In the 1980s Jim earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Yale University, where he also taught for 5 years.  In his spare time, he enjoys drawing and painting, listening to all kinds of music, reading and playing guitar.

 



Kathleen Erickson has over 28 years of experience in the financial services and insurance industry.

As a Wealth Advisor with Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC, Kathy’s focus is on client relationships. She spends her time meeting with clients to review their financial plans and investment portfolios. Throughout the year she proactively reaches out to clients to inform them of timely planning and portfolio updates.

Kathy holds the FINRA Series 7, 63, 65 and 24 securities registrations through commonwealth and her Connecticut Life & Health Insurance license. She is also certified with the Connecticut Partnership for Long Term Care.

Away from the office Kathy enjoys sailing, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. A resident of West Hartford, Kathy is happily married to her husband, Steve and has a daughter Christine, a son Kyle and stepson Blake.



   

Kim Skerry began working with Matt Somberg and Josh Gottfried in August 2009 as Director of Operations. A native of Rhode Island, Kim has over thirty years experience working in financial service and insurance industries.

Kim holds numerous professional financial registrations, including FINRA Series 6, 7, 63, 65 and 24 (held through Commonwealth Financial Network.) She also holds life, property/casualty and long term care licenses.



   

Nicholas Hogrefe began his career at Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC in June 2011. A native of Woodbury, CT, Nick is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in finance.

Nicholas holds the title of paraplanner and works closely with Matthew Somberg in preparing client investment and financial reports. Nick also oversees investment trading execution for Matt's clients.

Nick also holds the Connecticut Life and Health designation and in his spare time Nick enjoys playing basketball and weightlifting.



   

Lisa Cady has worked with Joshua Gottfried & Matthew Somberg since 2011. Lisa works as a team with Kim Skerry to provide customer service for our clients as well as preparing review materials for client appointments. Lisa is also Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management’s client event and workshop coordinator.

Lisa has over 30 years of experience in insurance, financial planning, customer service, and web-based technology. She has worked for both Fortune 500 companies and independently owned organizations. She is currently in process of obtaining her Series 6 securities registration.

A native of Massachusetts, Lisa has called Connecticut home for over 23 years. She enjoys music, reading, gardening, and traveling.





   

Taylor King started as an intern with Gottfried & Somberg in June 2012, and returned in 2013 to begin her career with the firm. She graduated from Hamilton College in May with a bachelor’s degree in both mathematics and comparative literature.

As a financial paraplanner, Taylor works closely with Joshua Gottfried to ensure that clients receive the best possible service and experience. She prepares materials, including investment reports and other financial analyses, for Josh’s clients.

Outside the office, Taylor enjoys traveling, practicing yoga, and spending time with family and friends.





   

Kathleen Centola joined Gottfried & Somberg Wealth Management, LLC in June 2013. Kathy works closely with Joshua Gottfried and Jim DeMartino and specializes in retirement benefits for State of Connecticut employees.

Kathy graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in economics. She has over 25 years of experience in retail management and operations. She started her career with Napier, a jewelry designer and manufacturer, where she co-developed a factory outlet operation that included 12 stores in 10 states. Most recently, Kathy worked with Brooks Brothers analyzing and forecasting sales and financial plans in stores across four European countries. She brings her wealth of computer skills and experience in long-range financial planning to our team.

Outside work, Kathy enjoys gardening and golfing with her husband Glenn.
